How to Measure an Existing Filter Cartridge for Replacement
A brand name or approximate appearance is not enough to guarantee fit. A replacement must match geometry, sealing, flow direction, materials and operating limits.
Measure overall length, outside and inside diameter, end-cap geometry, seal location and seal dimensions; photograph both ends and the nameplate; then confirm flow direction and service conditions.
1. Record the identity
Capture manufacturer, model, lot code, housing model and element quantity. Do not discard a damaged old element before measurement.
2. Measure the geometry
Use calipers for sealing features and a steel rule for overall length. Record values in millimetres and note whether length includes handles, adapters or gaskets.
- Overall length and effective body length
- Outside diameter and core inside diameter
- End-cap type, groove and O-ring cross-section
3. Confirm function, not only fit
Confirm inside-out or outside-in flow, filtration rating, media, gasket, maximum temperature and allowable differential pressure.
4. Use drawings or samples for final approval
For nonstandard, high-flow and proprietary interfaces, a dimensioned drawing or physical sample is the safest basis. A preliminary match is not a replacement guarantee.

Reference basis
Use the existing element and housing as the dimensional reference. The linked identification guides help organize observations; they do not certify cross-brand compatibility.
What is not established
A photo cannot establish hidden seal dimensions, material grade, retention efficiency or service life. Record unknowns instead of estimating them from appearance. Follow site isolation and depressurization procedures before inspection.
Before approval
Attach four clear views, then request a model-specific drawing and test/acceptance scope. Mechanical fit does not validate chemical or process suitability.
- 01. Whole element beside a scale; identify the length datum.
- 02. Both end faces, including handles, tabs and adapters.
- 03. Seal and groove close-ups with measured dimensions.
- 04. Housing seat and nameplate, with confidential data removed.
